RSI History

Residential Services of NE MN, Inc. (RSI) was originally formed by a group of parents who wanted their children with severe, multiple disabilities to be able to live in Duluth. They had been told that their children could only be served in institutional settings. These parents refused to take no for an answer and found some professionals to help them create RSI and open our first program in 1978.

From this beginning, RSI has continued its tradition of developing creative supports to help people live in their community. Examples of RSI's innovative services include:

• Staff enriched homes for people who are medically fragile.
• Minnesota's first consumer-owned home with foster care services.
• Region's first community home to serve people with severe brain injuries.
• The first community home to provide 24-hour personal care attendant services for people with severe, persistent mental illness.

RSI has also grown to provide supports to individuals, families, and children who have disabilities of all kinds, including:

• Developmental Disabilities
• Severe Emotional Disturbances and Mental Illness
• Childhood Behavioral Disorders
• Physical Disabilities
• Brain Injuries
• Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Over the years, RSI has expanded geographically, both establishing Adult Foster Care homes and providing In-Home and Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services across Duluth, up the North Shore, on the Iron Range, and in five East Central Minnesota counties.
