Our Stories - Noah

Turning Energy Into Optimism
People joke that you need running shoes when you're with Noah. This energetic, bright and inquisitive 5-year-old has been working with RSI's in-home support staff since November 2010.
When Noah's mom, Shannon, realized their family needed extra support to meet his unique needs related to autism, she researched a number of in-home providers. She was encouraged by RSI's focus on recreation and positive behavior support.
When he first started working with RSI, Noah had many outbursts and behavioral issues. Though he struggled with changing his routine and acclimating to new people, RSI staff patiently took time to get know Noah and his family.
One of their first objectives
was to refocus his energy into experiencing positive recreational events. Noah has
now had the opportunity to try new things, including riding horses and
interacting with animals at Westbrook, a 160-acre farm owned by RSI. He has
also gone to a baseball game, visited an aquarium, hiked on trails, and experienced
a number of other activities away from home.
RSI worked with Noah and his family to determine his personal goals, including
sitting during meals, trying new foods, dressing himself, following street
safety practices, and learning communication skills, such as using full
sentences and making eye contact when speaking to others.
Noah looks forward to working with staff, and Shannon looks forward to the
support and time to herself. She appreciates how naturally RSI staff fit into
their lives and the ability to receive services in their home where there is a
familiar routine.
Noah continues to make great progress in all areas. RSI's in-home support
services have given everyone a sense of excitement about Noah's future, as RSI continues
to support him in meeting the challenges of his autism.
